Real GDP per capita is the measure that makes living standards comparable over time and across countries by removing two main distortions: price changes and population size. It uses real GDP, which is GDP adjusted for inflation, so it reflects how much goods and services are produced in constant prices. Dividing that by the population gives per-person output, letting you compare how much each person could, in theory, consume or enjoy living standards. Using current prices would be nominal GDP per capita and would be skewed by inflation. Using GDP per person without adjusting for inflation would mix price changes with real living standards. And using total GDP without considering population misses how many people are sharing the output. Real GDP per capita avoids these issues, making it the best tool for comparing living standards over time and across countries.
